Terrorist, criminals and etc. – The bad guys, that’s the first thing that comes to my mind when it’s said hacker not until I watched “Hackers: the internet’s immune system by Keren Elazari ”, everything has changed.
All of us have flaws, nothing is perfect and so is our man-made technology specifically. That’s why we need hackers who chose to do good. Hackers who help companies, government, organizations and etc. By reporting the vulnerabilities and loopholes to their products or software and make solutions to protect it from the hackers who do hack for personal gain. It is not simply hacking your email or social media password – there’s more than that than you think. Bad hackers can kill thousands of people just by shutting down the engine of an airplane in the air or controlling medical devices to kill an individual or by controlling cars to bump each other. There is no exception, we are all subject to cyberattacks. It was really a major problem we need to face. Now I understand why software updates are important. I know many of us are irritated to regular updates we’ve been getting. It is because our technology keeps growing, new discoveries and new inventions. They need to improve their software for us to be safe. Technology is so vast that it can be our weapon or it can be used against us.

Good hackers are there to remind us for issues that we are not aware of. Just like an activist who complains because there’s a problem. An activist who is against bad governance and who used their voice for those who can’t speak to fight. Good hackers are hero activist too. Good hackers can disclose information through the internet about corrupt officials or projects that are anti poor or detrimental to our nature. We all know how important communication is in our daily lives and the power holds social media is. People now are going to protest. Good hackers unite us to act now. They enlighten us to demand better for our world as Keren Elazari said “They are not into your money – it’s your attention”.
As a student who is currently taking up Bachelor of Science in Technology. I realized our main enemy is not the hackers, it is ourselves who do the program code. It is our fault if cyber attack gets into our system. Hackers just find faults in our system and took advantage of it. We must think it advance to protect our system. Just like our parents do. They provide us a home that have doors with lock. They don’t let any part of the house be possible to thief to enter.
Giving incentives/money to hackers that can find fault to private or local system is one of the big steps to influence hackers to do the right thing. I know this is unending battle. We’ve come a long way. At least we fight not just blindly standing in a battle. If we cannot be cyber defenders/ cyber warriors then let us influence people to be one of them. The world needs them, we need hackers to be on our side.
